I understand that for adults and adolescents with an eating disorder, the decision to undertake treatment is a difficult one. However, life with an eating disorder means that regular daily functioning in school, work and relationships are often interrupted by feelings of self-loathing, preoccupation with weight and shape, intrusive obsession with calories, and paralyzing self-doubt.
Together we will work to identify your individual treatment goals. However, below is an overview to give you a general idea of my approach to working with people with eating disorders.
Individual Therapy
Identify and explore psychosocial issues that influence your level of functioning at home, school, or work, and interpersonal relationships.
Identify maladaptive eating behaviors, and learn new skills to modify eating behaviors, while simultaneously developing more adaptive strategies for coping with stressors.
Develop increased awareness of negative thoughts that interfere with your self-perceptions, social interactions, and other activities of daily living. Learn corrective thinking and behavioral modifications that lead to improved coping.
Explore thoughts and feelings about body image and how these thoughts and feelings influence your mood, self-concept, and participation in or avoidance of daily activities. Learn strategies to increase your comfort with your body, including corrective thinking, relaxation, and problem-solving to cope with distressing situations.
Family or Couples Therapy (if indicated)
Enhance direct communication of thoughts and feelings among family members.
Explore the dynamics within the family, understand how your eating disorder impacts relationships, and learn effective ways to support recovery.
Comprehensive Care
Help identify appropriate healthcare professionals to create a comprehensive and effective treatment team, to ensure that you receive the best care possible. This often includes a physician and/or psychiatrist and nutritionist.
Through our work together in therapy, you can develop new skills and insights to gain control over your eating disorder behaviors, opening new possibilities in all areas of life.
